Jack McVicar Minor Atom AE Petes in Tough Battle with Rangers
The Jack McVicar Professional Corporation Minor Atom AE Petes opened the OMHA Final series with the Oakville Rangers this weekend with games at home on Saturday (March 11) and in Oakville on Sunday (March 12).

The Petes opened Saturday's game with a quick burst of energy that resulted in a couple of great scoring chances in the first few seconds of the game, but the top ranked Rangers showed resolve and were able to clear their zone and then capitalize on a Pete's turnover to open the scoring less than 2 minutes into the opening frame.

The Petes responded with lots of pressure and looked to be pressing for the equalizer, until a late period penalty halted their momentum.  Only seconds into the penalty, the Rangers power play managed to find the twine and left the Petes trailing 2-0 as they headed into the intermission.

The second period was owned by the Petes, with puck possession in the offensive zone for the majority of the period and the Rangers strong defense struggling to contain the Petes.  The pressure finally paid off in the late minutes of the period, when Tristan Lehmann forced a turnover and managed to beat Oakville's goalie with a shot from the high slot.

Heading into the third, the Petes looked poised to complete the comeback, but an early period penalty shifted the momentum and took away the constant pressure that the Petes had been applying. Although the Petes were able to kill off the penalty, the break from the Petes onslaught seemed to give the Rangers a little momentum and at the midway point of the period they opened up their lead when they capitalized on a neutral zone turnover and went up 3-1.

The Rangers put the game out of reach with a late period slap shot from the point that found it's way through traffic and beat a screened Brody Bolton for the final goal of the game, giving the Rangers a 4-1 win and the first two points in the series.

Game 2 saw the Petes head into Oakville looking for redemption. This game would feature a lot of back and forth action with goaltending at both ends being incredible. Both teams had ample opportunity to put goals on the scoreboard, but as regulation ended, the score was knotted at goose eggs (0-0).

Overtime was fast paced, wide open hockey that had non-stop scoring chances at both ends of the rink, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.  Bradley Montgomery was stellar in net for the Petes, earning them a 0-0 tie that leaves the Rangers with a 3-1 points lead in the series.

The Petes will look to even up the series when Oakville comes to visit on March 18 - 2:45 at the Kinsmen.

Following Sunday's game, the team was excited to hear that Marie-Eve Mercer had given birth to future Peterborough Pete - Reign Mercer.  Congrats to Marie-Eve, Andrew and Olivia on the addition to your family and we hope to see him out cheering on the team before the season is over.
