FCI Windows Atom AA Petes Win Georgina Silver Stick Qualifier
The FCI Windows Atom AA Peterborough Petes are the Georgina Silver Stick Regional Qualifier Champions.

In this past weekend’s tournament (Nov. 17 to 19) the Petes found themselves down 2-0 early in the second period of the championship game to North Toronto.

The Petes were able to cut the deficit in half and entered the third period down by just a goal. Then, just a few minutes in the final frame, Peterborough tied up the game. They would complete the comeback with the game winner at the six-minute mark of the third period.

“We are fortunate to have good depth on our team,” said head coach Mike Farrugia.

“We had some key injuries and skilled players out of the lineup, and we were still able to get the job done this weekend.”

Peterborough opened the tournament Friday (Nov. 17) with a 7-0 win over the Leaside Flames. On Saturday, the team defeated both Orangeville 4-0 and host Georgina 6-0 in round-robin play.

The Petes then shutout a tough North Durham Warriors team in Sunday morning’s semi-final to advance to the finals.

The Petes entered the championship game without allowing a goal in the preceding four games, despite the fact they had to deal with the loss of players throughout the tournament.

“We knew that this year would be a very tough year so we made it our goal to make sure that all of our players could play in all situations,” Farrugia said.

“We spent a lot of time developing good habits and making sure the kids were capable. All of that hard work paid off this weekend.”

By winning the qualifier, the team has earned a spot in the International Silver Stick Finals tournament in Sarnia. That takes place in early January.

Next up for the team is a home-and-home matchup against Whitby in Lakeshore League play, then off to Lansing, Michigan Dec. 1 to 3 to compete in the Nations Cup tournament.
