Atom AA win Silver in Hockeyfest Tournament
The RBC Dominion Securities Atom AA Pete’s competed in the Oshawa Hockeyfest tournament over the weekend, winning silver with a 4-1 record throughout the weekend.
The team started Friday morning taking on the Clarington Toros.  This was a hard fought back and forth game, but the Pete’s came out on top with a 3-1 win.  Nathan Sorichetti had a strong game in net and recorded the win.  Travis Heffernan, Kaleb Jameson and Griffin Rutherford scored goals and assists going to Katie Belk, and Jack Davies.

Saturday morning the team came out to play one of there best games of the season vs. a very high ranked Sania Jr. Sting team.  This was a complete team effort and the team was flying in all zones and handed Sarnia a rare 3-1 loss, taking the Peterborough record to 2-0 in Hockey Fest.  Antonio Bianco was outstanding in net, holding it tight early on and late in the third period when called upon to make big saves.  Scoring for the Pete’s was Belk, Rutherford and Jameson with assists to Aedan Temple and Davis.

Going into the second game Saturday, the Peterborough group was a very determined team and a force to be recon with.  The Pete’s took on North Durham, a bitter rival from the Lakeshore League, whom they have split wins with so far this season.  Again the team came out ready and all players were focused and ready for the challenge. After trading a couple goals back and fourth the Pete’s took control finishing up with a 5-2 win. Sorichetti was once again a backbone in the pipes and make many key saves to keep the game close.  Goals were scored by Temple with two, Rutherford, Blake Moncrief and Caiden Rogers.  The helpers came from Rutherford with two, Belk, Temple, Heffernan, Hunter Young and Cameron Reynolds.

After the round robin the team finished first in pool A and would take on Richmond Hill Stars (second in pool B) in the Cross over Semi Final Sunday morning.  The Pete’s jumped on the Stars with a quick goal, and eventually built up a 4-1 lead that would become the final score.  This was a feisty game that saw many trips for both teams to the penalty box.  However the kids from Peterborough were able to keep their composure and with the win move on to the championship and a rematch with Clarington, who won the second cross over semi final vs Pool B first place Oshawa Generals. The goals were tallied by Belk with two, Heffernan and Davies with assists from Heffernan with two, Davies, Rutherford and Ben Gusso. Antonio Bianco picked up his second win of the weekend as the team moved to 4-0 and was on to the gold medal game.

The championship game was an extremely tight checking affair and the Toros from Clarington were determined after the Pete’s defeated them in the opening game of the tournament.  With chances going back and forth the Toros drew first blood in the second period for a 1-0 lead.  The game remained a one-goal game till 1:32 left in the third, when the Pete’s were caught going for the tying goal and a Clarington forward was able steal the puck to break in and score the insurance goal for the gold.  The Peterborough Atom AA are extremely proud of their weekend, 4-1 record and silver medal.  Great work by all players and thank you to our sponsors and parents who made the many trips to Oshawa all weekend, even in the bad weather and early mornings.
