This was it! The first game of
the year for these young players.
September 22 was their home opener vs Whitby.
They had their new jerseys, new hockey bags, new jackets…this was a new year.
They came into their home arena looking the part – dress pants, shirts, ties –
now they had to prove they could play the part as well.
Nerves were high, but the excitement was higher.
The coaching staff delivered a number of key messages to the players to focus on during the game, the most important was to have fun.
With their music playing over the speakers, the players took to the ice with speed and intensity.
The Whitby team divided their team – the stronger players on one side. However, the Petes did not; they always play equal squads. It took a few shifts to get their legs, however they started to come together and make some outstanding plays. Their passes were sharp, and shots hard. The goalies stood on their heads for the number of shots they faced.
For the first half of this season, games are half ice and the score is not recorded….officially. If you were to ask any of those players on the ice though, they could tell you the score. Of the 4 games that were played, the Petes proved victorious in 3 of them.
This young team could not have asked for a better start to their season. They got a taste of the competition they would be facing this year, and it couldn’t have been more positive.
Your Novice AA Petes are back on the ice at home September 29 vs Ajax at the Evinrude Centre.
