The Peterborough Mr. Sub U15 AE Petes fourth
game and final game of the round robin in the Warriors Tournament was versus
the West Grey Warriors at the Seymour-Hannah Sports Complex. The Warriors are a team located south of Owen
Sound. The Warriors entered the
tournament with regular season record of (16-7-1) (wins-loses-ties) and were
identified as an early favorite to win.
In the tournament the Petes entered the game (2-0-1) and the Warriors with
a (1-2-0). The Petes knew they would have
to be at there best because West Grey was mathematically already eliminated so
they had nothing to lose and everything to gain in this game. Which made them a dangerous opponent to play.
The first period started, and it was evident that the Warriors were playing loose and had plans to spoil the Petes party. The play went back and forth with the Petes getting most of the chances to score but couldn’t beat the Warriors goalie. A legal body check given by a West Grey defenseman would be costly for the Petes as it resulted in a major injury sustained by the Petes player. The Petes were forced to play shorthanded for the remainder of the game. The first period ended scoreless with the Warriors receiving a late penalty that would carryover into the second period.
Again, the Petes pressed the issue in the third period trying to score but could not figure out how to get one by the Warrior’s goalie. The Petes would be assessed a four-minute penalty late in the period. The Petes penalty killers would have to shine once again and kill off the man advantage for the Warriors. The second period ended scoreless as well.
The third period was more of the same. The Petes on this night couldn’t get the bounces to go their way and continued to be shut out. The Warriors though with under five minutes left in the game would break the deadlock and score to take a 1-0 lead. The Petes for the remainder of the period threw all they could at the Warriors net, even going so far as to pull the goalie for an extra attacker but could still not score. The game ended as a 1-0 victory for the West Grey Warriors.
It was a great effort put forth by the Petes! It would turn out that regardless of the outcome of this game the Petes record was good enough to put them into the semi-finals versus the Mariposa Lightning.
