What Does a Timekeeper Do?
Timekeepers play a vital role in the operation of minor hockey games. Working alongside on-ice officials and team staff, timekeepers are responsible for:
-
Operating the game clock and scoreboard
-
Recording goals, penalties, and shots on goal (if required)
-
Managing the penalty box and penalty timing
-
Completing and submitting accurate game sheets
Timekeepers are essential in maintaining the flow and fairness of the game by ensuring accurate timekeeping and game documentation. It’s a great opportunity for young people to develop responsibility, confidence, and communication skills while staying engaged with the sport.
Who Can Be a Timekeeper?
Typically, timekeepers are:
-
Reliable and punctual
-
Comfortable using technology (scoreboard controllers, online game sheets, etc.)
-
Able to focus and stay alert during fast-paced games
Training is provided, and timekeepers are paid per game.
