Pete's Take Gold in Oshawa Tournament
The Peterborough Minor Atom Select Pete's took home Gold in the A Championship of the Oshawa Heritage Select Tournament on the last weekend of January 2015.

The team had great tournament with 3 wins and 1 tie in the round robin to finish in first place.  The team started off the tournament with a 4 –1 win over the Oshawa Falcons.  The game began with both teams trading goals in the first minute and a half.  The teams then settled into a fast pace game until near the end of the second period, when the Pete’s took the lead and never looked back.  Peterborough really turned it on, keeping the play in the offensive zone for most of the third period and adding two more goals.

The second game of the day saw the Pete’s facing off with the Oshawa Hawks.  This game was fast paced with end to end action, as the teams traded goals and both lead at different points. They battled right to the end, finishing with a 3–3 tie.

Day two involved rematches from day one.  With a good night rest and review of the day before with the coaching staff, the team went into the first game in high spirits and with a revised plan: shoot, pass, skate.  The focus on the basics seemed to work and the Pete’s went out strong with 2 goals in the first period.  The second period saw a push from the Hawks, but with great goal tending from Luke, the team managed to hold them off and put one in the Hawk’s net near the end of the second period.  The third period saw the Pete’s pick up the pace and take control of the game with addition of another 2 goals to finish the game 5-1.

The fourth and final game of the round robin saw the Pete’s in a Saturday night show down with the Oshawa Falcons.  Coming off the fast pace game against the Hawks the Pete’s were in the zone and ready to go.  The team came out strong and set a fast pace right off the puck drop.  With 3 goals in the first period the team showed that they were up for the Saturday night game.  The Falcons proved that they were there to play as well, answering back with 2 goals of their own. The start of the second period saw the Pete’s pick up speed and passing, leading them to 3 more unanswered goals.  The third period saw both teams trading goals to end the game 7-3 for Peterborough.

The hard work the team put into the round robin paid off with a first place finish and a berth into the A championship game, bright and early Sunday morning.  This game had the Pete’s taking on the Oshawa Hawks for the third time.  Remembering the tie against against the same team on Friday, the team went into the game knowing they had to stay focused and disciplined.   With the shoot, pass, skate mantra in mind and the excitement of the championship game the team came out hard, but so did the Hawks.  The first period saw both teams skating fast, with action at both ends of the ice.  Peterborough struck first near the end of the first period, but the Hawks answered back before the period was out.  The second period saw more of the same, with great saves being made in both ends of the rink, but the Pete’s managed to get one in the net about half way through the second period.  The third period saw the Pete’s pick up the pace in an attempt to protect their one goal lead.  With 2 minutes left and the Hawks getting ready to pull their goalie the Pete’s plan was to get the puck deep and keep it there, this payed off with a late goal to finish the game 3-1 and take home gold.

Thanks to all the families and players for sharing rides and getting everyone back and forth from Oshawa, a great team effort by all.
