Welland Little NHL Tournament Results
Over the past weekend the Sokolski Real Estate Group Peterborough U16 BB Petes travelled down the 401 and QEW to compete in the Welland Little NHL Tournament.  This was a tournament specifically for “A” & “BB” division teams.  The Petes stayed in St. Catherines and played games in Port Colbourne and Welland. The Petes were excited to be able to play games against other “BB” teams.

On this weekend the Petes played four games versus: Caledon Hawks, Brampton 45’s, Guelph Gryphons and the Glancaster Bombers.

In the first game against Caledon Hawks the Petes were out maned and tried their best to out work the Hawks.  The Petes had their chances to score in this game but had the misfortune of coming up against a hot goalie that was determined not to allow a goal.  In this game the Hawks were too much for the Petes to handle and took the victory 3-0.  Carter K. had a solid performance between the pipes.  The biggest losses from this game would come as result of two separate plays.  First the Petes Assistant Trainer Joel G. got struck by a puck in the face during the first period which resulted in him going to the hospital and getting stitches.  Then secondly closer to the end of the game Hayven W. the Petes Assistant Captain would sustain a broken arm from a collision with a Hawks player and spent most of the day at the emergency clinic.  Hayven W. was awarded the MVP of the game award for his great leadership and solid performance in the game.

In the second game a further depleted Petes team was matched up to play against the Brampton 45’s.  The Petes inspired by the loss of their Assistant Captain due to injury sustained in the first game.  The Petes took to the ice with focus and a determination to play hard for their teammate.  The Petes controlled the pace of the game from puck drop and managed to have their greatest  offensive output and accumulate 26 shots on the 45’s goalie by the end of the game.  On this day the Petes were able to seal the deal and get their first victory of the year with a 2-1 win over the 45’s.  Adam M. played a great game in net only allowing the one goal and making some key saves to secure the win in the third period when the 45’s were pushing hard to tie the game.  Hayven W. was able to get back in time to witness the victory.  However additional casualties were had by the Petes as Mason N. collapsed after clearing a puck from our defensive zone.  After the tournament the team found out that he suffered a dislocated knee.  Adam M. won the MVP of the game award for his outstanding efforts in goal.

The next day the Petes had another of couple games to play.  First the Petes faced the tournament favorites Guelph Gryphons.  In this game the Gryphons speed was too much for the Petes to handle and the Gryphons cruised to an easy 4-1 victory over the Petes.  Carter K. played another solid game in net  making a bunch of saves to keep the game close and was awarded the MVP of the game award.  Another positive was the return of Joel G. who was back on the bench for this game.

In the last game of the tournament for the Petes they had to face the Glancaster Bombers.  The Petes knew this would be a challenging game as earlier in the tournament the Bombers were able to tie the Gryphons in their meeting.  With intension to end the tournament on a high note the Petes took to the ice in search of their second victory of the year and tournament.  Mathematically the Petes had already been eliminated from the tournament, so they were playing for pride.  However, on this night it wasn’t going to happen.  The Petes hung in there for a couple periods keeping the score close at 2-1 for the Bombers.  But in the third period the energy tank ran dry, and the Bombers took control of the game and scored outscored the Petes and handed them their final loss of the tournament.  The game would end 5-2 in favour of the Bombers.  Jacob G. was awarded MVP of the game for the Petes for his never quit attitude and always giving 100% every shift he played.

The Petes next game is against the Centre Hastings Grizzlies on Tuesday, November 22th @ 8:30 PM.
