Last night the Petes
were looking to carry the momentum from their tournament game victory over the
Halton Hills Thunder into their regular season game versus the Northumberland
Nighthawks. The Petes were also determined
to prove that the victory over the Nighthawks on November 23rd wasn’t a fluke. The stage was set for a season defining game
for the Petes.
The first period started
with back-and-forth action and both teams getting some early scoring chances. As the period continued the Petes started to
gain more and more confidence and control of the game. Both team’s penalties killers were called
upon early in the game to kill off initial penalties that were assessed. Then it happened, on the second Petes
Powerplay the Petes opened the scoring and took the lead 1-0. The Petes would ride the wave of success and
score a second goal to extend their lead. The Petes would end the period by successfully
killing off their second penalty and take a 2-0 lead into the second period. It was a great opening period by the Petes.
In the second period the Petes continued to dominate play and were
starting to frustrate the Nighthawks players.
The Petes overwhelmed the Nighthawks goalie with shot after shot. However, the Petes would run into some penalty
problems. This was a crucial time in the
game as a goal by the Nighthawks could swing the game in their favour and give
them all the momentum. On this night
though that was not going to happen as the Petes penalty killers were not only
able to kill off the penalty but score a shorthanded goal to make the score
3-0. The Petes
were fired up as the shorthanded goal fueled the entire team with more energy. The Petes would score again to make the game
4-0. The Petes would close out the second period on the penalty kill.
The third period started with the
Petes required to kill a penalty carried over from the previous period. After a successful penalty kill the Petes got
back to work and before you knew the frustration of the Nighthawks showed itself
and the Petes were awarded with another powerplay. And the Petes powerplay didn’t disappoint as
they scored the teams fifth goal of the game.
Then four minutes later at even strength the Petes scored again to extend
the lead to 6-0. However, the Nighthawks
were not ready to go away, and they pressed for a goal and would end up getting
one that was called back by referee due to goalie interference. This motivated the Nighthawks and with less
than five minutes left in the game they got their first and only goal. The Petes then stepped up their game to
another level and closed out the game with another two goals to end the game
with an 8-1 victory.
Way to go Petes!
