On January 13th
the Petes travelled to Madoc to meet up for the last time and play the Centre Hastings
Grizzlies. With the Grizzlies only a couple teams ahead
of them in the standings the Petes were looking to close the gap and prove to
another A team that the Petes are not a team to take lightly.
The first period
started with the Grizzlies asserting some dominance and taking control of the play. The Petes though hung in and battled hard and
were able to generate a few quality scoring chances of their own. The game
would remain scoreless until the ten-minute mark of the period when the
Grizzlies opened the scoring. The Petes
would be awarded a powerplay and have a chance to even the score, but the Grizzlies
team managed to shut down the Petes powerplay.
The first period would end with the Grizzlies leading 1-0.
Petes were looking In
the second period the Grizzlies didn’t waste any time getting after the
Petes. The Grizzlies pressured the Petes
in their own zone and were rewarded with their second goal of the night to
extend their lead. The Petes then not
backing down from the challenge stepped up their game and started to outwork
the Grizzlies. The Petes started winning
the races to the pucks and after a few great scoring opportunities were
rewarded with their first goal. Both
teams would take multiple penalties in the period but neither team’s powerplay
could put the puck in the net. The score
at the end of the second period would be 2-1 in favour of the Grizzlies.
The third period started with the
Petes required to kill a penalty assessed at the completion of the previous
period. This gave the Petes penalty
killers time to shine, and they did. The
Petes penalty killers were relentless in their defending, so much so that they generated
a great offensive opportunity and scored a shorthanded goal to tie the score
2-2. The Grizzlies though not deterred by
the goal went back to work on their powerplay and managed to score a powerplay
goal. The Grizzlies onca again took the
lead and the score was 3-2. The Grizzlies
would then find themselves in penalty problems which gave the Petes powerplay a
chance to answer back. And it did. The Petes took control of the puck in the
Grizzlies zone and scored a powerplay goal to tie the score once again at 3-3. The Petes and Grizzlies continued to get scoring
chances after scoring chances but both goalies were sharp on this night and
kept the score at 3-3. Then with under ten
minutes remaining in the game the Petes ran into their own penalty problems. Even though the Petes were able to kill off
the Grizzlies powerplay attempt the Grizzlies would gain allot of confidence from
the opportunity. Using this momentum,
the Grizzlies would score an even strength goal to take the lead once
again. The score was now 4-3 for the
Grizzlies with under seven minutes left in the game. The
Petes tried to battle back once again but it was not to be as the tank had run
dry. The Petes would end up surrendering
another goal and lose the game 5-3.
Overall, it was a great effort
put forth by the Petes. It was a competitive
game that provided some great learning opportunities.
