On January 18th
the Petes hosted the Peterborough Petes “A” team in their third and final game versus
each other in the regular season. So far,
the “A” team had got the better of the Petes by winning both games previously
played. With the last game resulting in
a 12-0 loss for the Petes. However,
since that game the Petes have improved their play and as a result recorded
their second victory of the year over the Northumberland Nighthawks. The rink was packed with spectators and the stage
was set for a great game.
The first period
started with the “A” team getting the puck deep into the Petes zone and getting
an early offensive faceoff. The “A” team
then won the faceoff and scored a goal 30 seconds into the period to take a 1-0
lead. This was the wakeup call the Petes
needed as they stepped up their game and started to get their own scoring
chances. The Petes were also called upon
to play some great defense as they kept the “A” team to the outside boards
limiting them to low percentage scoring chances. This great defensive positioning caused the “A”
team to repeatedly turnover the puck which gave the Petes some great scoring opportunities. The period was almost concluding when the “A”
team would end up taking advantage of a loose puck in front of the Petes net
and score to take a 2-0 lead into the second period.
The second period
continued with he Petes frustrating the “A” team with their defensive play to
the point when the “A” team were accessed a 2-minute penalty for “Clipping”. The Petes powerplay would get it chance to go
to work. The Petes managed to get some
great scoring chances on the powerplay but were unable to get a puck past the “A”
team goalie. Gaining a lot of confidence
from the powerplay the Petes continued to apply pressure on the “A” team’s
defense which resulted in their defense turning over the puck in their zone
that led to quality scoring opportunities. However, on this night the opportunities
didn’t translate to goals scored. The
Petes then would find themselves with a penalty of their own and the “A” team took
full advantage and scored a powerplay goal to increase their lead to 3-0. The second period would end, and the teams headed
into intermission with that score.
The third period started with the
Petes energized to finish the game strong.
On this evening the Petes did not back down from any of the challenges
made by the “A” team. The Petes battled
hard to the final buzzer however on this night the Petes were not getting the
bounces and the “A” team would end up scoring a couple more goals in the period
and finish the game with a 5-0.
There was great improvement shown by the Petes
on this night as they stepped up defensively and physically. Way to go Petes!
The Petes next game is
against the Oshawa Generals on Monday, January 23rd @ 8:00 PM at the Campus
Arena.
