On February 10th
the Petes hosted the Northumberland Nighthawks in their third meeting of the
season. So far this year the Petes have
outscored the Nighthawks 13-3 combined in the first two games. The Petes were looking to continue this
success against the Nighthawks on this evening and get their third win of the
season.
The first started with
the Petes taking control of the game.
Over and over the Petes continued to rack up the shots on goal, and
within the first two minutes of the game opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead. However, this seemed to inspire the
Nighthawks as only 59 seconds later they scored to tie the game at 1-1. The game after this point continued as
previous with the Petes getting most of the scoring chances. The Nighthawks were growing visibly
frustrated as they became more interested in playing a physical game instead of
a skilled game. With the Petes focused
on utilizing their skill were finally rewarded with another goal to retake the
lead 2-1. Then the frustration boiled over for the Nighthawks
as one of their players decided to go too far and which resulted in a player
from each team getting ejected from the game.
The score at the end of the period was 2-1 in favour of the Petes.
In the second period the
Petes kept their foot on the gas and continued to dominate play in the
game. And then four minutes into the
period the parade to the penalty box started for the Nighthawks. The Nighthawks were accessed four consecutive
penalties in the period with the Petes only receiving one. The Petes took full advantage and scored two
powerplay goals in the period. The Petes
though would allow one goal of their own and the score at the end of the period
was 4-2 for the Petes.
After the second intermission
the third period started with a different looking Nighthawks team taking to the
ice. Most of the Nighthawks players were
now more focused on playing hockey instead of getting penalties. This new focus benefited the Nighthawks as
they started to regain some momentum and as a result scored their third goal of
the game to now make the score 4-3 in favour of the Petes. The game then became a back-and-forth battle
in which both teams got quality scoring chances but neither team could get one
past each other’s net minders. Both
goalies shut the door. Then just past mid-way
through the final frame the Petes scored to extend their lead to 5-3. Both
teams continued to press for another goal.
Then with under a minute remaining and the goalie pulled for the Nighthawks
the Petes scored an empty netter to make the game out of reach. However, a late penalty taken by the Petes
made the final 33 seconds interesting but on this night, it was not to be for
the Nighthawks as the Petes took the victory 6-3.
It was a great test for the Petes
to maintain their composure in the game when faced with a very frustrated Nighthawks
team that was searching for their first win of the year. Way to go Petes!
