Let’s Play Hockey!!
Submitted By Melissa Gillespie on Sunday, February 2, 2020
February 1 was the day – 5 on 5, full ice, 3 periods and keeping score…for real!

The Novice AA Under Armour Petes opened the regular season on home ice….and not just any ice, but the ice that the OHL Petes play on - the Memorial Centre. They were set to get their full ice season started on the right ‘skate’ against Northumberland.

The atmosphere was electric. The music was pumping, the smoke machine was cued up, the national anthem set to play, and the announcer had his deep announcer voice ready.

The players took to the ice as their names were announced throughout the rink for all to hear. They lined the blue line, listened to Canada’s national anthem, and then exploded into a warmup.

Davies got the start and was focussed right from puck drop. You could see the nerves in some players, but it didn’t take long to get over them. The play went back and forth for most of the first, and then just over 7 minutes in, Fuller took the puck, skated through a few players, and fired it into the net. This got the Petes going. They continued the scoring with 2 more goals in the second and another 2 in the third.

The final score was 5-0 for the Petes. Davies posted the shutout. Goals were scored by Vincent, Kekki, Simpson and Buchner. Assists from Casselman, Fuller, Marshall, Kekki, and 2 for McIntyre. Healthy scratches were Finley Reid and Caleb Gillespie.

It was a very strong showing for the first game, and the hope is to carry this forward to February 8 when the Petes travel to Whitby.

1, 2, 3…..Petes!
