Minor Atom AE Take Top Spot After Weekend Wins
The Minor Atom AE Petes had a huge weekend of hockey taking the top spot in league standings away from the Whitby Wildcats.

The Petes started the weekend with a Saturday afternoon game against an improving Oshawa Generals team. The team battled hard back and forth in the first period which ended 0-0. The Petes stepped up their physical style of play with three penalties and three goals in the second period. Scoring by Aiden Wisco, Liam Kent and Trent Hopson, with assists going to Evan Michael, Zach Lynch and Declan Cavanagh. Going into the third the Petes kept up the tough play with four more trips to the box and also showed there strong penalty killing ability while being two men short for over a minute. Zach Lynch and Liam Ireland both scored with assists from Kyle Cranville and Chase Pinheiro. Alex Duley had a strong game in net facing 17 shots for a big shut out and winning the PowerAde Player of the Game award.

The team then traveled to Whitby on Sunday, both teams tied for first with 21 points and 14 games played each.  The Petes came to play and dominated the Wildcats in the first period with a strong forecheck. Zach Lynch scored un-assisted after his line battled down low for the puck. In the second period the Wildcats got into penalty trouble and Caden Lewczuk-Koval capitalized with a goal, with the assist from Liam Gunning. The second period ended with the Petes up 2-1. The Petes kept the pressure on in the third period. Liam Ireland was awarded a penalty shot after a Wildcat tripped him while on a break-away. The Wildcat goalie stood his ground and Ireland was not able to get the puck around him. Liam Laundry stepped up halfway through the third after his gritty line battled down low in the Wildcats zone and popped in an un-assisted goal. The Wildcats kept the pressure on, getting a goal in the last few minutes of the game to make it 3-2. The tough battling line of Cavanagh, Lynch and Laundry put the pressure back on the Wildcats in front of their net with two minutes to go in the game. After a scramble for the puck in front of the net all 5 Wildcats jumped Cavanagh cross-checking him to the ice and sending one player to the box with a cross-checking penalty. Liam Kent secured the win with a power play goal at 1:39 in the third with the assist going to Aiden Wisco. Nic Johnson had a solid game facing 23 shots and only letting in 2 for the huge 4-2 win over the Wildcats. The Petes showed amazing discipline ending the game with zero penalties while still making their physical presence felt.

The Petes will be traveling to Barrie next weekend for a tournament where they will face the top teams from the York-Simcoe and Tri-County leagues.
