Service Master Restore Minor Peewee AE Petes Battling to Keep Season Alive
The Service Master Restore Minor Peewee AE Petes have been working hard the past week to keep their Lakeshore playoff run alive. Pitted against a formidable team in the Whitby Wildcats, the Petes will need to be on top of their game as they play host for game 5 of the series on Tuesday night.

Game 1 saw the Petes hit the ice with some solid first period play that included a series opening shorthanded goal from Sawyer Spencley, assisted by Jack Pacey. Unfortunately for the Petes, many missed opportunities in the opening frame allowed the Wildcats to gain some confidence and periods two and three were all Whitby as they scored four unanswered goals to take game one with a 4-1 victory.

It was an entirely different feel in game 2. The Petes looked to have put the loss behind them and were playing with confidence for all three periods. DJ Crough opened the scoring midway through the first period when he tipped home a power play goal off a slap shot from Jordan Garfat. Whitby would tie things up late in the first, but Peterborough wasn’t prepared to fold up this time around and continued to push for the go ahead goal. Their constant pressure would pay off early in the third when Spencley would score the eventual game winner. The Petes would seal the victory in the dying minute when James Chandra scored an empty netter off assists from Will Mattie and Crough.

The Petes returned home on Saturday (Feb 23), hoping to take the lead in the series. The Petes were able to jump on the Wildcats early and opened the scoring on the first shift of the game when a point shot from Pacey was tipped cross crease by Spencley to a waiting Andrew Wasson who made no mistake hammering it into the back of the net. Although the Petes were in control of the game, a costly penalty midway through the second period gave the Wildcats some momentum as they took advantage of the power play and tied things up. With the game winding down it looked like Whitby had iced things as they scored the go ahead goal with 5 minutes left on the clock. It was time for the Petes to bare down and find a way not to let the game slip away. With just over two minutes left on the clock, Matthew Sokolski came through with a hard working goal and drew the Petes even. With the crowd buzzing and the clock nearing the final minute, the Petes got the break they needed when Spencley was hauled down and drew a Wildcats penalty. The Petes showed patience as they moved the puck on the power play and with 22 seconds left on the clock, Sam Dickey sent the crowd wild as he netted the game winner off a rebound from Riley Hagerman’s shot.

The Petes travelled to Whitby for game 4 (Feb. 24) and although they got off to a slow start, they continued the series trend by scoring the opening first period goal once again (Sokolski from Chandra). The lead would hold until the midway point of the second period, when Whitby would score to level things. With their backs against the wall, facing elimination, the Wildcats proved to be the hungrier team on this day, and an early third period goal was all that they needed as they handed the Petes a 2-1 loss, and evened the series at 4 points each.

Game 5 is set to go Tuesday night (Feb. 26), 7:45 @ the Kinsmen.

The Petes would like to thank Quarry Golf Club and Kawartha Home Hardware for their sponsorship this season.
