Warriors Tournament - Game #3 vs Halton Hills Thunder
The Peterborough Mr. Sub U15 AE Petes third game of the Warriors Tournament was versus the Halton Hills Thunder at the Bill Burgoyne arena.  The Thunder are a team located west of Toronto.  The Thunder entered the tournament with regular season record of (8-9-0) (wins-loses-ties).  In the tournament the Petes entered the game (1-0-1) and the Thunder with a (0-2-0).  However, the Petes knew they could not take the Thunder lightly as they would be motivated to improve their record and get a win.

The first period was very competitive with back-and-forth action.  The Petes though would end up on the wrong side of some calls and be forced to kill off three penalties in the period.  After successfully killing of two of the penalties the game would remain scoreless at the end of the first period with one penalty carrying over.

 

The Petes not deterred by the penalty calls persisted on and were determined to take control of the game.  The Petes killed off the third penalty and went to work.  The Thunder now would find themselves in penalty problems and get assessed a double minor for Head Contact.  This would be the opportunity that the Petes team needed and the powerplay would get a chance to flex its muscle.  The Petes were successful and managed to score twice on the powerplay to take a 2-0 lead.  The Thunder in an effort to regain momentum in the game took to focusing on the physical game.  However, on this night the Petes would not back down and proved to the Thunder that they could also play a physical game.   With the crowd now engaged fully in the action the stage was set for an exciting end to the game.  The Petes would maintain their 2-0 lead over the Thunder going into the third period.  Two penalties would be assessed by the referee at the buzzer, one to each team.

 

The third period started with four-on-four action and within eight seconds into period the Petes won the opening faceoff and with great determination forced the puck into the Thunder zone and score a great goal to increase the lead to 3-0. The Petes though would once again find themselves in penalty problems and the Thunder would capitalize this time on the powerplay making the score 3-1.  With momentum gained from the powerplay, the Thunder upped the intensity and started to take back control of the game.  The Thunder would be rewarded with a second goal to make the score 3-2.  The Petes now realized they were in a game and would need to dig deep to secure the victory.  The Petes stepped up and within 28 seconds later scored to restore the two-goal lead at 4-2.  The Petes though would take a late penalty in the game giving the Thunder the opportunity to get back into the game.  The Thunder would go all in and during their powerplay would pull their goalie to make it a 6-4 player advantage.  The Petes penalty killers were up to the task though and killed off the penalty, however with only nine seconds left in the game the Thunder would cause a scrum in from of the Petes net and score a buzzer beater goal.  The game would end with the Petes being victorious getting a 4-3 win over the Thunder and eliminating them mathematically from continuing in the tournament.
